Deep linking
Deep linking, on the World Wide Web, is making a hyperlink that points to a specific page or image on another website, instead of that website's main or home page. Such links are called deep links.

Delisting
The removal of a site from search engine results.

Description Meta Tag
A meta tag describing the content of the web page. Used by some search engines for keyword density purposes. It is recommended that you use a couple of your targeted keywords in the description meta tag.

Directory
A search site whose index is compiled by human editors (as opposed to web spiders). Although editors may pro actively include sites they consider to be of value, most inclusions are the result of submitted requests. The decision to include a site, and its subsequent ranking and categorization, is one of editorial judgment rather than being computed by the search engine.

DNS Propagation
When a new domain name is registered (or an existing one is transferred to a new DNS), the information must make its way around the entire internet. This process usually takes around 24 hours, during which time the domain will be inaccessible to many or all users.

Domain Name Server
Computer that translates human-friendly URLs (words)into computer-friendly IP addresses. This process occurs every time a user requests a page from a website.

Doorway
A document with a small amount of text (usually coherent but sometimes gibberish) intended to rank well specifically for one targeted expression. In the old days, people created as many doorways as they had targeted keywords and search engines to work with.

Doorway page
An entry into a site other than the homepage. It may be a legitimate landing page, used to measure the results of a specific promotion or campaign. But such pages are often created exclusively to spam search engine results, or misrepresent a site's content. Search engines frown heavily on the use of doorway pages, and may penalize sites if the practice is reported or discovered.

Download Speed
This is a measure of how quickly a webpage loads from request to rendering. Technically, it is actually a measure of time not speed, as the measurement is different for two different web pages on the same Internet connection.

Dynamic (Processed) Pages
Dynamic pages are processed by the server before being sent to your browser or a search engine. This means that the pages can potentially be updated slightly each time a user looks at them, and the pages are often updated automatically. There are many 'languages' used to create dynamic pages, the most common are PHP (Pre-Hypertext Processing), ASP (Active Server Pages), JSP (Java Server Pages) and dotNet, although there are other less common types, such as CGI, Perl and ColdFusion.
